iRobot Roomba 870 Vacuum Cleaning Robot
Product provided for review. As always, all thoughts opinions are my own.
I’ll be honest and say that sweeping and vacuuming aren’t my favorite household chores. I do them because I have to, but honestly, besides cleaning the bathrooms, it’s my least favorite chore. But it’s a chore that has to be done every day when you have three kids and a shedding black lab that live in the same house.
The constant “did you wipe off your feet at the door” and “don’t walk through my dirt pile” can wear a momma thin, y’all. That feeling of just getting finished, back hurting, but beautifully clean floors — and then the dog running through the house with dirt on his paws. I’m not a fan, at all. All that hard work and time, wasted.
iRobot Roomba 870 Review
But the iRobot Roomba 870 arrived a few weeks ago and things have been a little bit different around the house. I’m not vacuuming and sweeping every day and I don’t get so aggravated when the dog runs through the house with dirt on his paws, simply because the iRobot Roomba(R) 870 Vacuum Cleaning Robot is doing most of the work for me.
The dog doesn’t know what to think about it, but I think it’s pretty fantastic.
The iRobot(R) Roomba(R) 870 comes assembled in the box, almost ready to use. After removing it from the box and removing the battery pull tag, you can easily set the day and time using the buttons on the front of the machine. Before using, the Roomba will need to be fully charged for 8 hours on the home base. Set up the home base station, close to an electrical outlet, and easily accessible by the Roomba.
One of the features of the Roomba that really comes in handy is the option to be able to schedule when the Roomba cleans. Programming the Roomba is extremely easy and is done by using the buttons on the front of the machine. I like to have it clean the floors while we are out of the house, so that the kids and dog leave it alone. If you don’t use the scheduling option, you can manually start the Roomba with the large CLEAN button on the front of the machine.
If there are areas in your home where you don’t want the Roomba to go, you can set up the two virtual walls that are included in the package. We set them up just to see how they worked, but we don’t use them because we let the Roomba clean all the flooring on our first level.
So far, I’m impressed with the cleaning power that the Roomba has shown on all the flooring surfaces in my home. It seamlessly transitions from tile to carpet, from rugs to wood floors, without missing a beat. The two AeroForce extractors effectively removes the dog hair that my black lab so kindly leaves behind as he runs through the house, even the hair that settles along the floor and the baseboards.
Because of its slim profile, the Roomba fits in areas that sometimes get missed with a traditional vacuum. I love that it easily fits beneath my furniture and gets those tough to reach areas that hoard dog hair and dust.
The Roomba is pretty intuitive and lets you know when it has encountered an error or when it requires maintenance. If it encounters an error, it will stop and audibly tell which error it has encountered. Once you correct the error, you can start it again simply by pressing the large CLEAN button on the top. When the bin needs to be changed, a red light will appear on the top indicating it’s time to empty it. The HEPA filter helps to create a clean, healthy environment, which is ideal for pet owners and allergy sufferers.
When the machine has finished cleaning, it will find its way back to home base to charge. Every time it gets done, I’m amazed at how much stuff needs to be emptied out. It’s actually kind of embarrassing, but it makes me feel so much better that it’s being thrown away rather than sitting in my house.
The Roomba 870 is iRobot’s most powerful vacuuming system yet, delivering 5x the suction and removing up to 50% more dirt, dust, hair and debris. It has a suggested retail price of $599.99, and while that is pretty expensive, I think it’s worth every penny. With the Roomba doing my daily sweeping and vacuuming, I can use that time doing other things, like spending quality time with my family.
If you had a Roomba keeping your floors clean, how would you spend your extra free time?
