Aflac Holiday Helper

This post is sponsored by Aflac. I was compensated for writing it, but all opinions are 100% mine.

The best part of my job as a blogger is being able to align myself with brands to do social good in my community. I absolutely adore the opportunity to help out families right here in my own backyard that need a little help or to simply let them know that they’re cared for.

I was given the opportunity to be a Aflac Holiday Helper this year and was able to surprise a family with an unexpected Christmas! Read about it here.

When Aflac reached out to me this year to gauge my interest in being an Aflac Holiday Helper for someone who had recently experienced a health issue, I immediately thought of a sweet family in my church.

Imagine being able to see one day and not being able to see the next. That’s what happened to this gentleman.

It’s been hard watching him adjust to his new normal. Heck, it’s been hard watching his wife adjust to their new normal.

Because he doesn’t have eyesight, he can’t work. As I’m sure you can imagine, it has taken a toll on the family finances. Anytime you go from two incomes down to one, there are sacrifices that have to be made.

There are also new medical bills. He’s seen doctors and had surgeries. As I’m sure you’re aware, medical care is not cheap.

It overwhelmed my heart to be an Aflac Holiday Helper this season and to help this family out in such a huge way. I felt like one of Santa’s little elves delivering all the things I was able to purchase for them which helped them maintain their previous lifestyle with the holiday grant from Aflac.

When I approached them to see what they have been in need of or postponing due to medical expenses this holiday season, they were taken aback and really didn’t know what to ask for. I reached out to their daughter-in-law and learned that their vehicle needed a catalytic converter. They had been unable to buy one following the medical expenses, so I was able to buy the part they needed and a man at the car dealership offered to install the part for them absolutely free.

Like most hard-working, stand-up citizens, it was hard for them to ask for anything. In fact, I had to approach them several times because it was extremely hard for them to tell us they needed anything. It was only after we gently pushed that they finally opened up. They didn’t want or even expect help, and that made me want to help them that much more.

I was able to fill their pantry, freezer, and refrigerator with foods that they love. I was able to purchase rolls and rolls of paper towels and toilet paper. I bought deodorant, body wash, shampoo & conditioner, and other toiletries. I tried to buy anything and everything that they would need over the next several months. I was also able to purchase him several bottles of insulin since he’s a diabetic.

With just the two of them at home, they have enough food to last them a while. But what you can’t see from this photo is that by purchasing items like egg rolls and kolaches, he can prepare those himself which helps his confidence and boosts self worth.

I can’t imagine waking up one day and becoming totally dependent on someone else. But because he can’t see, he is completely dependent on his wife. She has been so selfless in caring for him and she does so with such gentleness and love.

I asked him what he would buy this holiday season if he could have anything he wanted. His only request was for his wife, that she be able to buy herself something special. I got her a gift card to her favorite clothing store so that she could spoil herself.

And even though he requested nothing, I couldn’t let him go without a special gift, too. Due to the aftermath of losing his eyesight, it’s hard for him to change the channel on the television. He still watches because he can still hear, but to help maintain his desired lifestyle, he needed an easier way to change channels. The latest technology offers devices with voice commands, so we surprised him with a voice-command device for his television. He’s so excited to be able to easily navigate his way through his favorite shows on his own by voice commands through the remote.

It’s so important that we look beyond the four walls of our homes into the community around us. I’m so blessed by this opportunity and so thankful for brands who see the value in these random acts of kindness.

Recently, Aflac debuted a new ad, “Ski Patrol,” which takes a light-hearted approach to highlighting how life sometimes throws you the unexpected. The commercial reminds us to make sure we’re protecting our health and our lifestyle with help from supplemental insurance, like Aflac.

It has made it even more obvious to me that the way my life is today could easily change tomorrow. It’s so important to protect our future and plan for those unexpected illnesses with help from supplemental insurance. Aflac pays cash when policyholders are sick or hurt so they can focus on recovery, instead of the stress of financial burdens. The ripple effect of the financial burden caused by an unplanned health event can be especially compounded during the holiday season. That is the inspiration behind the #AflacHolidayHelpers program.

By partnering with online influencers, like me, across the country, and celebrity parents Kevin and Danielle Jonas, Aflac is giving a combined $50,000 this holiday season to help families who have experienced tough times due to recent health events. Being able to fulfill holiday wishes by helping this sweet couple has truly been such a blessing to me during this special time of year. Seeing their faces light up totally made my year! Thanks Aflac, for giving me this amazing opportunity to give back in such a huge way.

Aflac herein means American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus and American Family Life Assurance Company of New York.
